Air Fryer Popcorn Chicken Recipe

Healthier, but with an irresistible "fried" taste and texture, this air fryer popcorn chicken was described by recipe testers as "super addictive!" Digging out chicken nuggets from finely crushed corn flakes will add a great Good crunchiness, and they brown better in an air fryer than using flour. Don't skip the powdered sugar because it also helps brown the popcorn chicken nuggets (and balances the dry spices).

Is air fried chicken healthy?

By most measures, air frying is healthier than frying in oil. It cuts calories by 70% to 80% and has a lot less fat. This cooking method might also cut down on some of the other harmful effects of oil frying.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground thyme
  • ⅛ teaspoon dried basil
  • ⅛ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ⅛ teaspoon dried sage
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • cooking spray (such as Misto®)

Directions

Step 1
Put the chicken pieces in a medium bowl.

Step 2
Combine salt, chili powder, black pepper, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, basil, oregano, and sage in a small bowl. Reserve 1 teaspoon of seasoning and sprinkle the remaining seasoning on the chicken. Stir well.

Step 3
Mix cornstarch and reserved 1 teaspoon of seasoning in a resealable plastic bag; shake to combine. Put the chicken nuggets into the bag, seal the bag, and shake it evenly. Transfer the chicken to a fine mesh strainer and shake to remove excess cornstarch. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until the cornstarch starts to absorb into the chicken.

Step 4
Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).

Step 5
Spray the oil in the air fryer basket and place the chicken nuggets in it, making sure the nuggets do not overlap. You may need to make two batches, depending on the size of your air fryer. Atomize the chicken with cooking spray.

Step 6
Cook for 4 minutes. Shake the air fryer basket and spray the chicken with oil again to avoid dry or powdery areas. Cook until the inside of the chicken is no longer pink, and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes. Serve immediately.
